‘The New City Inexperienced’ is a celebration of the tucked away, the neglected and the greened-up edges of our city areas captured over 10 years by the photographer Jane Sebire and author Caroline Beck. Gardens inside prisons; asylum seekers rising house tastes from overseas on northern allotments; canals reworked into public parks; housing estates turning into English meadows – small, extraordinary delights in odd locations cared for by visionaries, fanatics and the merely curious. It grows out of a private love of those areas by each Jane and Caroline who says of the exhibition: “I’ve come to see by working with Jane and writing about these a lot cherished inexperienced fringes of our cities and cities that my entire life has been formed by such locations. As a younger woman I sought them out as a treatment for the desolate panorama by which I grew up the place all wildflowers had been branded as weeds, to be derided and destroyed. As an grownup I’ve spent a great deal of my skilled life discovering these anarchic Edens and making an attempt to show their quirky magnificence into phrases.”
